During some of the major battles of history, it is tradition for the army to march forward to the beat of a drum, or in some cases to the music of a marching band.

In todays modern warfare, drumsmen and marching bands are no longer used in battle, instead they are used as purely social sections of the military.

ATC units can have their own marching bands, which also entitles the unit to more cadet NCO's and more members of staff.

They are also given the opportunity to be awarded qualifications in level of skill awarded, although a basic pass is all that is required to attain these badges
